Parent-Led ABA Therapy

ABA therapy, or Applied Behavior Analysis, uses scientific evidence to build skills. Although the concepts and techniques used in ABA can be effective across individuals, it has been considered the “golden standard” for learners with autism. Quality ABA providers focus on promoting the learner’s unique skills and personality, self-advocacy, special interests, and general wellbeing.

If your child has previously received ABA therapy, you may have had any of the following experiences:

  • Staff coming in to provide hours of therapy in your home that you can only kind of see or understand what’s going on or why
  • Sending your child into a clinic/center, where you really didn’t know what was happening all day
  • Meeting infrequently–and sometimes just in passing–with a supervisor on the case who didn’t seem to understand your challenges or be able (or willing) to teach you how to carry progress over to the home
  • The provider discharging your child because they met their therapy goals within direct therapy, even though you’re still having problems at home, in daycare, in school, and/or in public

At From the Nest, we know that, for many learners, this structure just is not adequate. Even if they make progress, parents are too often left feeling confused, left out, and frustrated. How are they supposed to help their kids to maintain their safety and independence, especially as they grow, if therapy staff hold the cards close to their chests?

We want to partner with the parents who want to be active in their children’s journeys! In parent-led services, we can teach you how to build the same skills in the same way as direct ABA therapy. For some families, this model can go hand-in-hand with direct therapy in order to deliver maximum learning opportunities and ensure that their children can behave the same across people and situations. For other families, a parent-only model provides great schedule flexibility on a less intensive schedule.
